Explanation:

Shravan is the fifth month in the Hindu calendar. It starts in the latter half of July and crosses over to mid-August. Called aadi maasam in the southern part of India, this is a time for festivals, celebrations and a lot of traditional customs. There is a certain religious ambience to this month and this coupled with the colorful festivals make it a very eventful time in the Indian culture.

Shravan, the month of Lord Shiva

The month of Shravan is revered as the month of Lord Shiva. All His devotees pray for a better world and appease him during this time, especially on Mondays. According to age old legends, the month of Shravan was the time when the demons and Gods decided to churn the ocean to find out who is the strongest. They did this so that the Goddess of wealth Lakshmi would be pleased and give them the nectar from the ocean. The demons and the Gods mutually agreed that they would share the nectar equally.

The legend related to Shravan

The story describes how 14 kinds of holy things came out of the churning process. The halahal was one of them, but it was a deadly poison and since none of the Gods or the demons were ready to take it, Lord Shiva drank it. In fact, it is this reason that is given for the Lord having a blue colour. Lord Shiva is worshipped as Neelakantha during this time, where Neel means blue and Kantha means throat. When Lord Shiva had the poisonous halahal, his throat started burning and he was offered the water of the river Ganges to give him relief. This incident is believed to have taken place on a Monday, thus making Shravan Somwar so popular. Somwar means Monday in Sanskrit. So every Monday in the month of Shravan, devotees take coconut water in place of the Ganges water and pour it on shivlings in temples of Lord Shiva.

Beliefs and scientific explanations

It is also believed that any shloka or prayer that we say during the month of Shravan gets a double effect, as the Lord is pleased during this time. People do not eat meat, alcohol and offer only prayers to Lord Shiva. The scientific reason for people not eating fish or non-vegetarian food is because most fish spawn during this time and it is believed that if we leave them alone they would bear more fruit.

Shravan and festivals

The month of Shravan is the time for festivals. Beginning with Janmashtami, which celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, you have Raksha bandhan the festival for siblings, Narali Porrnima revering Lord Varuna the sea God, Nag Panchami which is an Indian festival worshipping snakes, and Pola a very famous festival of farmers in Maharashtra.

In south India, the month of Shravan sees festivals like Basava Panchami in Karnataka, Avani Avittam in Tamil Nadu, Gamha Purnima in Odisha, Kajari Purnima in Madhya Pradesh, Pavitropana in Gujarat Jandhyam Purnima in Andhra Pradesh, Shravnani Mela in Jharkhand and many such others.

The month of Shravan sees a lot of rain and is a time filled with freshness in the air and a green and progressive environment.

Shravan this year began on July 27 and would go on till August 25, 2014. The following are the dates for various festivals during this time.

July 29 – Mangala Gowri Vrata

August 1 – Nagara Panchami

August 8 – Vara Mahalakshmi Pooja
