In the story 'The rattrap', the tramp observes that the whole world is a rattrap and the the human beings are constantly tempted with goodies. Once he falls for it, his fate is not different from that of a rat.

The vagabond proves to be hundred percent right when we think of the modern world. There are many things that always tempt the human beings. Some of them hold out for a while without falling for them but sooner or later almost all of them fall into traps. The reason for this is the greed of man. When he is poor he would like to have the basic amenities of life and when he is offered the same he is ready to do anything. If he stops at that level, he may even escape some time later. But his greed will not let him stop at that . He will be yearning for better things and rush into any trap that offers him what he wants.

This character of man in responsible for corruption in the country. Some of them accept huge bribes and thereafter falls into ignominious scams and gets trapped for life. In the story, the vagabond's greed makes him steal his benefactor's money and thereafter he had to avoid main roads. Thus he ends up in the forest. When he is offered hospitality of the Wilmansons he is afraid of yet another trap. But thanks to Edla's kindness, he refrains from getting into another trap and gets out of the initial one by returning the the money he had stolen. For once, he was able to overcome his greed.
