For Indians, cinema is an escape from rising prices, corruption, powercuts and general chaos. Bollywood often takes the nation’s mood and jazzes it up witha full bucket of emotions. There is Indian cinema outside Bollywood as well. ButBollywood is the all-encompassing giant. Bollywood influences fashion, haircuts, music and even national traditions.Talking about Bollywood music, we notice that popular Hindi cinema (and itsregional copies) stand out for not only ‘action’, visual effects, big stars and otherforms of excitement: it also produces a very vibrant music industry. Filmmakers, actors, singers, lyricists and music composers brought their own cultural influencesand injected these into the product that they created. The diverse culture of the nationwas thus better reflected in the films and their music.Film after film has obsessively emphasized the quintessential oneness of people ofdiverse faiths - be they Hindus, Muslims, Christians or Sikhs - and has shown them ascherishing their close ties as neighbours, friends, colleagues and fellow citizens.Indian movies have evolved as a unifying cultural element for people in differentstates or regions within India. People get to know more about cultural diversities prevailing in different parts of the country. Movies also portray the value ofstable andharmonious families as a hallmark of Indian culture. Our filmmakers are obsessedwith resolving family conflicts in a way that leads to greater understanding andharmony in the larger family rather than a breakdown or nuclearisation of it. Manymovies like “Damini”, “Rang De Basanti”, “Daman” and many others conveymessages about social evils like rape, corruption, dowry, domestic violence, etc andhow they are dealt with, rightfully.Bollywood is much more complex and a far greater agent for positive social changeand plays a significant role in popularizing culture and traditions prevailing in Indiathan is commonly acknowledged. The birth of Indian cinema coincided with thefreedom struggle against the British and therefore, from its very inception, it wasengaged in defining a cultural identity that was Indian in its shape and form. And withthe end of colonization, Bollywood emerged as India’s ‘model of national unity’. It isstill on the same path of spreading Indian culture, values andpositive social messageswhich greatly shape our heterogeneous yet united society.
