When a 43 year old leader starts a political race in third place with 36 seats and finishes the election with 184, that’s a major victory. It’s would have been easy to seize the opportunity to promote himself. But that’s not what Mr. Trudeau did. In his acceptance speech, he came across as a humble leader, valuing the people around him. He commended his wife, children, his close collaborators, his supporters and the Canadian people. Then he made positive comments about his opponents, and was gracious to the Prime Minister as he thanked Mr. Harper for his service. Rather than striving for recognition, he put others first. He demonstrated that the best leaders are humble. Mr. Trudeau demonstrated character by addressing issues to the best of his abilities rather than personally denigrate his opponents. As a spiritual leader, I’m reminded of the wise advice in Proverbes 16:18 “Prides goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall”.

2) He listens to the people he leads and values them. I’ve often heard the saying “You can’t please all the people all the time” and that becomes an excuse to simply fulfil a leader’s personal ambition. I appreciated the fact the Mr. Trudeau explained on several occasions that the party’s platform was built on hearing what Canadians had to say and wanted. A good leader is not a puppet constantly needing peoples’ validation, but he is one who is willing to “listen” and “hear” what his constituents have to say and what concern’s them. He acknowledges that his position of leadership is not to solely fulfil his ambitions, but rather add value to others by serving instead of lording over them. As leaders we are reminded of the words of Christ “You’ve observed how godless rulers throw their weight around,” he said, “and when people get a little power how quickly it goes to their heads. It’s not going to be that way with you. Whoever wants to be great must become a servant.” (MarK 10:42) Mr Trudeau repeated a phrase that I had heard him say prior to election day and that was “Conservatives are not our enemies, they are our neighbours”. Great leaders are also “unifiers”, bringing together people of different convictions and empowering them to give their best. Even though I didn’t vote for Mr. Trudeau and don’t agree with a number of positions and convictions, I am committed to praying for the new Prime Minister and I encourage you to do the same.

So the executive summary of this blog is that without humility, you can’t listen, learn and improve. Strong and respected leaders strive to go beyond their egos and put the needs of those they serve before their own. They bring together the best leaders and followers and set a transformational model of leadership for emerging leaders. Why? Because they are concerned, not only with their opportunity to “lead in the moment”, but also in preparing and setting up the next generation for success. That’s called succession planning! Let’s pray for our new Prime Minister

So to all spiritual leaders, strive to humble yourself and bring glory to God. Allow God to be the One to honour you in a way that pleases Him!
