Students from Dawnville Elementary had the opportunity to demonstrate their public speaking skills and take pride in personal accomplishments. On March 30, the kids took part in a speech contest sponsored by Modern Woodmen of America, a fraternal financial services organization.

Students competing in the contest shared their presentations on this year's topic "Inventions That Have Improved the Quality of Life." The winners were Ann Marie Smith, first place; Alston Evans, second place; and Erin Carrier, third place. Each received a trophy and a gold award pin, and their names will be engraved on the school's speech contest plaque.

Gold award pins were also given to the next nine ranking finalists: Macie McClure, Ashton Suarez, Daniela Lopez, David Reyna, Natalie Martinez, Veronica Nunez, Yadirah Ordonez, Aubry Eckelbarger and Isaiah Greeson.

All received certificates of participation for their hard work.

Modern Woodmen's School Speech Contest is one of many free Youth Educational Programs that Modern Woodmen offers to schools nationwide. More than 100,000 students compete in the contest each year.

Your voice can reveal as much about your personal history as your appearance.

The sound of a voice and the content of speech can provide clues to an individual's emotional state and a dialect can indicate their geographic roots.

The voice is unique to the person to whom it belongs.

For instance, if self-esteem is low, it may be reflected by hesitancy in the voice, a shy person may have a quiet voice, but someone who is confident in themselves will be more likely to have command of their voice and clarity of speech.

This page can help you understand and utilise the full potential of your voice.

Aspects of Effective Speaking

Effective speaking has nothing to do with the outdated concept of 'elocution' where everyone was encouraged to speak in the same 'correct' manner. Rather, effective speaking concerns being able to speak in a public context with confidence and clarity, whilst at the same time reflecting on your own personality.
