Speech on 'Saying no to plastics'

Good Morning respected teachers and my dear friends.

Today is a very important day for all of us, the citizens of Mother Earth. It is the  World Environment Day. But we have not been very responsible citizens since the past few decades. The greatest blunder we have made in spoiling the Environment is our extreme dependence on plastics and our over use of them.

We use plastics for each and every luxury and need. Be it plastic bats and balls, packets or tiffin boxes, containers or tanks, cutlery or crockery-plastic is omnipresent.

The greatest problem with plastic is it is not bio-degradable. It cannot be burnt or decomposed. When burnt it creates toxic gases and is not fully burnt out.

Thousands of animals die everyday due to the consumption of plastics. Air, water, soil all is polluted by plastics. Marine life is suffering due to plastic accumulation.

The best way to stop the use of plastic is to initially reduce the usage of plastic materials. The next step is to switch over to non plastic goods and items. For example we can use paper bags, steel containers, wooden tooth brushes, gunny bags, hardened wheat plates.

All these products are bio degradable and can be used as substitutes for plastic.

If we want to live in a healthy green Environment, I request all my friends to begin right from today to reject plastics and use its substitutes.

Answer:

Respected Principal, teachers and my dear fellow students. I wish you all a very good morning. I feel very honoured and privileged to stand here today, because our school is celebrating the World Environment Day with the rest of the world. Today I wish to speak a few words on the harmful effects of the use of plastic products.

Plastic products are not bio-degradable and can remain unchanged for many years. This adversely affects the fertility and the quality of the soil.

Plastics products including plastic bags are a health hazard. Exposure to toxic chemicals emitted by plastics causes cancer, decreases the effectiveness of the immune system, and are responsible for many other diseases.

Dumping of plastic bags, plastic bottles, etc. has created an unhygienic condition to our environment. Plastic litters has become a major pollution to our surrounding.

Our freshwater sources like rivers and lakes are becoming dumpsters for plastic bags.

Plastic products, especially plastic bags find their way into rivers and oceans. They are swallowed by fish, seabirds, and other marine creatures leading to death by suffocation.

Since plastic bags, plastic bottles and other discarded plastic products do not degrade, they accumulate in drainage and sewerage systems and block the flow causing waterlogging.

Plastic products including plastic bags are often disposed off by burning and this releases poisonous gases into the atmosphere. This pollutes the air we breathe and increases global warming.

Friends, what can we do to reduce the use of plastic products and thereby reduce harmful effects on our health and our environment?

  1. First, we need to say "No" to plastic bags given by shopkeepers. Carry your own shopping bag.
  2. Carefully separate plastic products from other garbages for recycling.
  3. Stop buying plastic products. When there is less demand, the manufacturing will decrease.
  4. Replace plastic bags with bags made of biodegradable materials like cotton and jute.
  5. Stop burning plastic as a means of waste disposal. The toxic gases released pollute the air we breathe. It increases global warming.
  6. Don't buy bottled water. Carry your own nonplastic water bottle.

Thank you.
