Almost half of the 19th century was lived by people of the subcontinent under the rule of Britishers as slaves. People of the subcontinent had to struggle hard and they made many sacrifices.
About rest of the century i would say there wasn't any technology which now has become so essential that I seems next to impossible to survive without it. Any problem related to any topic can be solved by its use which wasn't present at that time.
