The standard unit of speed is m/s.

So what this implies is,

speed = how many metres you have travelled in unit second

which means

how much distance you have travelled in unit time.

as metres is standard unit for length which is distance and second is standard unit for time.

And moreover speed is a physical quantity to explain about an object and to distinguish it from others.

And speed has been defined so in order to set a relationship between distance and time.

It is more clear when you look at a distance time graph......
