To find average speed, add the numbers together and divide by the amount of numbers there is

50 + 40 = 90

90/2 = 45

the average speed is 45km/hr

hope this helps

Answer:

Given :-

  • :\implies Speed in the forward direction, v₁ = 50 km/h
  • :\implies Speed during the return journey, v₂ = 40 km/h

To Calculate :-

  • :\implies Average speed, v(avg) = ??

Formula to be used :-

 :  \implies{\sf{v(avg) =  \dfrac{Total  \: distance}{Total  \: time \:  taken}}}

Solution :-

Now,

  • :\implies In this case we are neither given the total distance nor the total time taken.

Let,

  • :\implies The distance traveled in the forward direction be x
  • :\implies Total distance, d = x + x = 2x
  • :\implies Time taken during forward journey, t₁ = x/50 h
  • :\implies Time taken during the return journey, t₂ = x/40 h
  • :\implies Total time taken, t = x/50 + x/40 = 9x/200 h

Now,

 :  \implies{\sf{v(avg) =  \dfrac{Total  \: distance}{Total  \: time \:  taken}}}

 :  \implies{\sf{v(avg) =  \dfrac{2x }{ \frac{9x}{200}}}}

 :  \implies{\sf{v(avg) =  \dfrac{2x}{9x} \times 200}}

:  \implies{\sf{v(avg) =  \dfrac{400x}{9x}}}

:  \implies{\sf{v(avg) =   \cancel\dfrac{400x}{9x}}}

:  \implies{\sf{v(avg) =  44.44 \: km/h.}}

Hence, the average speed of the whole journey is 44.44 km/h.
