Answer:

Carbon dioxide is more dense than air ( at the same temperature and pressure ), because the individual particles are on average more massive, not because they are close together. They move very slowly for a given kinetic energy. Hence the velocity of sound is minimum in carbon dioxide.

The speed of sound in carbon dioxide will be lesser than in air.

  • The substance through which sound travels is called the medium, and sound moves best through air and water.
  • The speed of sound is influenced by several factors, including medium, density and temperature.
  • When the medium is dense, the molecules in the medium are closely packed, which means that the sound travels faster.
  • The more mass the molecule lesser will be it's kinetic energy.
  • carbon dioxide molecule is massive than air molecules.
  • Hence the speed of sound in carbon dioxide will be lesser than in air.
