General characteristics. Spirogyra is very common in relatively clean eutrophic water, developing slimy filamentous green masses. In spring Spirogyra grows under water, but when there is enough sunlight andwarmth they produce large amounts of oxygen,adhering as bubbles between the tangled filaments.
