Answer:

Spirulina is a cyanobacteria which can be used as Single cell protein (SCP). SCP are the alternate sources of edible proteins derived from micro-organism for animal and human nutrition. Microbes like Spirulina can be grown easily on the materials like waste water containing starch, straw, molasses, animal manure and even sewage. Such utilisation of substrates thus reduce environmental pollution. Also these microbes serve as a great source of nutrition as they are rich in proteins, minerals, fats, carbohyderates and vitamins. Thus growing such microbes on a large scale is beneficial both environmentally and nutritionally for humans.

Two ways by which large scale culturing of these microbes is possible are -

  • It is carried out in shallow ponds, with continuous stirring to provide sufficient turbulence.
  • It can also be carried out using an artificial medium containing optimal salt concentration.
  • Large scale cultivation or mass cultivation of Spirulina is usually performed in shallow ponds, equipped with paddle wheels to mix the culture.
  • Two types of shallow ponds have been used: One is lined with concrete, while the other is a shallow earthen tunnel, lined by durable plastic material or PVC.
  • One difficulty with paddle stirring is that the flow is not sufficiently turbulent to produce an optimum light pattern for single-cell alga. Other means are used for stirring to increase turbulence and consequently photosynthetic efficiency.
  • Another cultivation procedure of Spirulina is done by providing an artificial medium with optimal salt concentration.
