1.we draw symbols on maps because it is not possible to draw on a map the actual shape and sizes of different features such as building roads etc.so they are shown by some specific letters colours etc. We draw symbols on the map because we annot draw the actual shape and size of the features of the earth.

2.No we can't understand a map without symbols and directions.

Symbols are an important part of a map. They give a lot of information in a limited space. With the use of symbols, maps can be drawn easily and are simple to read, even if we don't know the language of an area and therefore cannot ask someone for directions
