Assume that the material of the wooden block provides uniform retardation to the penetrating body at all times . This assumption is extremely imoortant for solving this problem .
Key equation for solving this problem :
v² = u² + 2*a*s
v = velocity of the body at any later instant
u = initial velocity of the body
a = uniform acceleration ( or retardation ) of the body penetrating the wooden block
When body penetrates 3 cm into the block ,
v = u/2
a = keep it as it is
s = x = 3 cm , but keep it as ‘x’ as for now , we will plug-in the value later .
So
(u/2)² = u² - 2*a*x
Or
3u²/4 = 2*a*x —— ( * )
Now ,
Let t

Suppose the initial velocity is ‘v'
And so the final velocity after covering 3 cm will be v/2
So by equation of motion,
v^2= u^2 +2as
(v/2)^2= v^2 +2as
v^2/4 -v^2= 2as
2as= -3v^2/4
a= -3v^2/4×2s
a= -3v^2/24
a= -v^2/8
Now,
v^2= u^2 + 2as
And the final velocity is zero
0= v^2/4 -2×(v^2/8)×s
s= (v^2/4)/2× v^2/8
So,
s= 1cm
