The diagram can be split into three rectangles. The longest is the one sitting horizontally and the two shortest are the ones sitting vertically. The one on the top which is sitting vertically has an area of 5 cm/m long, as (the length which is) 5 × 1 (which is the width) equals 5.

The two rectangles which are sitting vertically and are directly parallel to each other are both 2 cm/m each, as 1 (which is the length) × 2 (which is the width) equals 2. (Keeping in mind that the formula of a rectangle's area is length × width).

The total area of the whole shape is 5 + 2 + 2 = 9cm/m.
