Step-by-step explanation:

in this question we can use quadratic formula instead of middle term split

 {b}^{2}  - 4ac

 =  {( - 7)}^{2}  - 4 \times 2 \times ( - 1)

 = 49 + 8

 = 57

so this equation has two real and distinct roots

now applying quadratic formula which is

x =  \frac{ - b  \frac{ + }{ - } \sqrt{ {b}^{2} - 4ac }  }{2a }

x = \frac{  - ( - 7) \frac{ + }{ - }  \sqrt{57} }{2 \times 2}

x =  \frac{7 +  \sqrt{57} }{4} or \: x =  \frac{7 -  \sqrt{57} }{4}
