We will solve this problem by using the Middle Term Splitting Method. In this method, we will split the middle term such that its sum is the middle number or term and its product is the third number or term.

It is in the form of ax² + bx + c

Now, the answer to your question :

x² + x - 2

Split the middle term i.e. write it as a difference

➾ x² + 2x - x - 2

Factorise it (x² + 2x) and extract the negative sign from the expression

➾ x(x + 2) - 1(x + 2)

Factor the expression

(x + 2) (x - 1)

Hence, the factors of x² + x - 2 are (x + 2) and (x- 1)
