Sponge are compressible but solid, why?

In minute pores of sponge air is trapped. When pressed, air is expelled out so it is compressible. It is a solid as it has definite shape and volume.

because they have holes between them to allow air to go out which makes it compressible and it is neither in liquid state nor gaseous state
