sponge is compressible because it is having minute pores in which air is trapped .on presssing the air is expelled. it is still considered as a solid because it has a definite volume and shape does not changes unlesss compressed.

Answer:
Sponge works on the principal of compressibility. Though it is solid, it can be compressed when force is applied to it. Moreover there are several small holes available in a sponge. These holes are automatically filled with air.
When we compress the sponge, the air comes out and when we release the sponge air will again get trapped in the pores of sponge and sponge will regain its shape and volume immediately.
