The water they live in transports oxygen and minerals to their bodies as it *soaks* into them, as well as the flow of water providing motion to their bodies!
Sponges are a bit easier to think about because most of us have come in contact with a sponge in some form. For example, when I am washing the dishes I soak my sponge in the soapy water by squeezing it and letting all the water in, now my sponge has soap in it because it was carries in on the water!
