Sponges are sessile that means they can not move.

They can’t produce their own food and hence they need to acquire food with other means.

Staying at one place, they pump water with their body and it helps then in eating.

When they filter water, they obtain food particles flowing in the water and consume it.

Therefore the sponges are commonly called as filter feeders.
