The British govt., christian missionaries and Indian reformers played an important role in the spread of modern education in India. We see in 1781, Warren Hastings set up the Calcutta Madrassa for the study and teaching of Muslim law and after 10 years in 1791, Jonathan Duncan (Resident) started a Sanskrit College at Varanasi for the study of Hindu law and philosophy. Likewise Raja Ram Mohan Roy founded the Hindu College at Calcutta.

In 1813 Act, the British govt. allocated one lac rupees for the spread of modern education. In 1835 Lord Macaulay introduced English as the medium of instruction in modern schools and colleges. In 1854 Woods Dispatch was sent to India which provided the responsibility  of education to the Govt. and was thus an important step in the development of modern education.

Later we see more and more schools and colleges were founded both by the government and the reformers and missionaries which played an important role in disseminating modern education in India.
