The increasing polarizing power is Ba2+ <Sr2+<Ca2+.

  • The polarising power is the distortion produced by cation to the anion in a compound known as polarising power.
  • In this, the anion is polarised and the tendency of the anion of getting polarised is known as polarizability.
  • Polarising power is calculated by Fajan's rule.
  • Fajan's rule states polarising power is directly proportional to the covalent character.
  • Polarising power is directly proportional to the size of the anion and inversely proportional to the size of the cation.
  • So, Sr2+, ca2+ and Ba2+ are ions of the 2nd group of the periodic table and the size of Ca2+ is the smallest and the size of Ba2+ is the largest. The smaller the action size larger the polarising power.
  • So, polarising power of calcium ion is highest and barium ion is lowest.
