Height of window from ground = 40 feet
distance of foot of window from wall = 9 feet

Length of ladder =  \sqrt{40^2+9^2}= \sqrt{1600+81}= \sqrt{1681} = 41 feet

(because a right angled triangle is formed where ladder is the hypotenuse.)
