Let the age of Rahul be 'x' years and Lakshmi be 'y' years.

Then, we have,
x/y = 5/7  
x = 5y/7     (i)

And, four years later,
Age of Rahul = x + 4
Age of Lakshmi = y + 4

Then, 
(x+4) + (y+4) = 56
x + y + 8 = 56
x + y = 56 - 8 = 48
x + y = 48

Putting the value of 'x' in the equation;
5y/7 + y = 48
5y/7 + 7y/7 = 48
5y + 7y = 48*7
12y = 48*7
y = 48*7/12 = 28

Then, x = 5/7 * 28 = 20.

Thus, Rahul's age is 20 years and Lakshmi's age is 28 years.
