Staging area is a database where the transactional data is stored after extraction. The data is temporarily stored there till it is cleansed and transformed, using meta data layer.
Staging area is a layer by itself, called staging layer. It is after data extraction layer and before ETL (Extraction, transform, load) layer.
Layers DEL, SA, ETL and DSL, DLL etc. are all connected to Meta data layer and are depicted below meta data layer in the architecture. That means that all the software process in these layers use the information in the meta data layer, which contains information about the elements, data bases, tables etc.
