Coral bleaching:

  • Coral bleaching occurs when coral polyps expel algae that live inside their tissues.
  • The algae provides 90% energy of coral energy. Coral Continue to live but begin to starve after bleaching, some coral recover.
  • The leading cause of coral bleaching is rising temperature(global warming).

List of some causes:-

  • Increased or reduced water temperature,
  • Oxygen starvation caused by an increase in zooplankton levels as a result of overfishing.
  • Bacterial Infections.
  • Extreme low tide and exposure.
  • Mineral dust.
  • Ocean acidification.

Impacts:-

  • If the reef vanished, expert says, Hunger, Poverty and Political Instability Could ensue.
  • The extinction of reefs would create ultimately create a domino effect that would trickle down to human societies that depend on fish livelihood.
  • Coral reefs act as protective barriers for the coastlines  by reducing wave impact, which lowers the damage from storms.
  • Changes in ocean chemistry.
  • Infectious Disease.
