Substituted phosphines, the phosphorus analogs of amines, constitute an important class of organic bases. Very few data on the basicity of these compounds are available in the litera-ture. The relative basicity in nitro-methane of a large number of substituted phosphines has been estab-lished by nonaqueous titrimetry and is reported in this paper. Data obtained from the mixedsolvents meth-anol-water have supplied basicity values for some of the stronger phosphine bases. A correlation can be made between basicity in water and in nitromethane
