Standing at some distance from a wall inside a room,if you shine a torch on the wall,you can see the light on the wall but not in air along the path,why?

its due to particles btw it smoke fog etc ...it willnt happen if u do the same with laser as it wavelength nearer while torch light's wave lenth is wider
