Given : Standing on one bank of the canyon, Jane notices a tree at a bearing of 115º. Then the  surveyor walks 300 meters.

To find ; What is the distance across the canyon.

Solution:

Bearing is a direction measured from north and it tracks angle in clockwise direction with north line

Let say distance across  the canyon.  = P

115º

180º -  115º  = 65º

distance across  the canyon. = P/tan65º + P/tan85º

= Pcot65º  + Pcot85º

Pcot65º  + Pcot85º  = 300

=> P = 541.7

distance across  the canyon.  541.7 m
