The straightforward or literal meaning of these lines is that in case the African lion has to choose between eating up a good boy and a bad one, the lion will definitely prefer the bad boy. The poet seems to say that the lion ‘enjoys’ gobbling up a ‘bad lad’, but does not like the taste of ‘good and unbeatable boys’. The poet feels that there is a difference in taste. So, a bad boy is definitely going to get eaten up by the lion, but the good boys will escape once the lion gets to know that they are good boys.
The deeper meaning of the stanza is that the lion does like the taste of good boys, but he will not know the taste until he actually takes a bite. So, it hardly matters how good or bad a boy is, because the lion will definitely get a bite, and the bite could cost the boy his arm, leg or head. The poet is being sarcastic in these lines. It is only towards the end of the poem that the readers completely understand the sarcasm.
