Good question.
We know that starts produce there own light but planets do not still they are visible to us bcz the surface of the planets reflect the light coming from the stars and make themselves visible. This is due to the reflection through the surface of the planets that we are able to see them.
And from earth we can see planet's only due to the light of sun that falls on the planet helps them to become visible to us.

Even though when planets do not have their own we are able to see them. It is because of the light from the stars which falls on them. We just see them due to their reflection of the light of the stars on the planet.
