Answer:

The sound was getting louder and louder. I tried to figure out where was it coming from, but it felt like it was all around me. However, I rushed towards the pathway between trees that led to the jungle, because this was the only way visible. The jungle was much dreaded in our village. All of us had been told stories about people going to the jungle and never coming back, about some supernatural, terrifying stuff that kept happening therein. But, at this moment, when I could hear a child crying terribly, as if its in some serious danger, I couldn't make myself think rationally, I couldn't stop my feet from running towards the jungle. As I was coming nearer and nearer to the sound, I felt the urge to look behind, as if someone was there, staring at the back of my head, waiting for me to look at them. I turned, slowly, afraid to see what all that person could be. But, there was nothing. No one. Not a speck of existence. I was terrified. The feeling that someone was staring at me, just intensified. It was so overpowering, that I started looking around frantically, hoping and not hoping to see someone.

But, the sound of the child's cry suddenly disappeared into thin air. And now, It was replaced by a horrendous laughter. I could now see a shadowy figure making its way towards me, with heavy steps. It was difficult to make out who the shadow belonged to, but I had a feeling it was a lady's.

"Bravo!" an obnoxious voice said. It indeed was a lady. Her voice, sharp like a cat's claws, seemed to be piercing the insides of my ears.

"You are so brave, little man! didn't you remember your parent's advice? Not to go to the jungle! So, my boy, what brought you here?" she spoke in her characteristic sharpness.

"who was it? who was crying? did you hurt someone?" I tried to muster all the courage within me and speak. Her laughter filled the air once again.

"who do you think it could be? a child I brought from your village? a poor girl? It was my own voice, of course!" And then, she laughed again.

"Why? why were you doing that?"

"Because, I wanted to meet you."

She snarled, her sharp teeth blaring.

And she jumped towards me. I was terrified to death, my feet refused to move, and my brain refused to work.

It was then that I heard a loud crash. Someone or something had hit her head, and she was falling to the ground, in front of my eyes. Soon after, her body disappeared, just as it had appeared before me. And a child, of about 7, came out of the bushes. "I knew you had come to help me!" the little boy squealed.

"That witch had fooled me into coming to the jungle by offering to show me my grandpa, who had died yesterday. My dad had said that grandpa would never return, that I couldn't see him. But, I didn't want to believe him. So, I agreed to come with her. But, she tried to kill me." the boy Spoke between sobs. "Thank you for distracting her, so I could hit her with this bark of the magical tree, which my grandpa had gifted me." He smiled, and I couldn't stop myself from smiling to. I bent to be at the same level as the boy, and thumped his shoulders for his bravery. We then left for the village with the good news of the witch's death. But, suddenly, everything before me went white with bright light, and my eyes opened to reveal my bedroom, and then, there was silence.
