This article is based on a historical and ethnographic study of an Islamic reform movement initiated by Abu Bakr Siddique (d. 1939) that emerged in colonial Bengal. The major part of the ethnographic study was conducted for 18 months in a village named Furfura in Hooghly district of West Bengal.
