Starting from rest a scooter acquines a velocity of 36km/h in 10 sec. and then brakes are applied it takes 20 sec. to stop.Calculate the acceleration and distance travelled.

Explanation:

36 km/hr is 10 m/s.

acceleration= dv/dt=10m/s / 10 sec = 1 m/s/s

deceleration = dv/dt= -10m/s / 20 sec= -.5m/s/s

distance is found through:

v^2=u^2 +_2as

in the first (acceleration) part: 10^2= 0 + 2 (1) s

100 = 2s

distance traveled = 50 m after acceleration

the second (deceleration) part: 0 = 10^2 + 2(-.5) s

-100 = -1s

distance traveled = 100 m after deceleration

total distance = 150 m

If, after acceleration from rest and deceleration to rest, the change in velocity is zero, the overall acceleration is zero.
