Given : Starting from the point of origin, a man walks 25 km in a direction 30° below the +x-axis and then walks 30 km along the + y-axis to an endpoint.

To Find : Displacement of the man from the starting point to the ending point

Solution:

Starts from Origin ( 0 , 0)

man walks 25 km in a direction 30° below the +x-axis

=> angle = - 30°

Distance along x axis = 25cos(-30°) = 25Cos30° = 25√3/2   km

Distance along y axis = 25Sin(-30°) = -25Sin30° =- 25(1/2) = -12.5    km

walks 30 km along the + y-axis to an endpoint.

Hence total displacement  along y axis = -12.5 + 30    = 17.5  = 35/2 km

Final coordinates are ( 25√3/2   , 35/2)

Displacement from origin  = √{(25√3/2)² +  (35/2)²}

= (1/2)√{1875 + 1225}

= (1/2)√3100}

= (1/2) 10√31

= 5√31

Displacement of the man from the starting point to the ending point

5√31  km  = 27.84 km
