Four characteristics of a secular state are:
- A secular state is one in which all religions are permitted equally. There is no discrimination based on religion. The state does not declare a specific religion as an official religion.
- All persons have the right to freely profess, use and represent their religion. The state does not involve in religious affairs.
- But, there is no rigid alienation between the state and religion. Whenever there is a dispute among religious communities or practices, the Supreme Court can intervene.
- A secular state does not privilege a particular religion. All religions are equal in front of a state and its laws.
