The oxidising agents are the elements which reduces itself and oxidises other elements present in the reaction. The sulphur dioxide acts as both reducing and oxidising agents due to its multiple valencies. The oxidation state of the sulphur varies among -2, 0, +2, +4, and +6.

The reaction in which sulphur dioxide acts as oxidising agent is given below:

SO_2 + Mg = MgO + S

In this reaction, the oxidation state of sulphur is +2 which oxidises manganese and reduces its oxidation state to zero where the sulphur becomes its elemental form (S). Thus, acting as an oxidising agent.
