The concept of diversity in the workplace goes beyond including employees of various racial and ethnic backgrounds. According to the Society for Human Resource Management, diversity means valuing the characteristics that make a person unique, such as age, ethnicity, education level and family background. Inclusion of diverse individuals fosters a rich exchange of new ideas among employees and helps an organization leverage the unique character of its workforce.

Causes of Diversity
Several phenomena have contributed to the the prevalence of diversity in the modern workplace. The population of the United States is becoming more ethnically and racially diverse. Census figures show that non-Hispanic whites are a slow-growing segment of the population, so it follows that the number of non-Hispanic whites in the workplace will shrink. Over decades, enforcement of civil rights and antidiscrimination laws has helped create an atmosphere of tolerance for individual differences. The median age of the population has also increased, meaning more older Americans are working. Finally, companies want to reach consumers in the global marketplace, and they need employees who understand consumer culture in countries outside the U.S. All of these factors have caused the American workplace to embrace diversity.

Diversity Initiatives
As a result of the various causes of diversity in the population, many organizations have established initiatives that facilitate a diverse workforce. One strategy involves posting new job openings outside the usual channels to generate a diverse pool of candidates. An organization may also create diversity networks, where individuals with similar attributes can gather, celebrate their culture and help others understand it. A company's diversity networks may sponsor special events for the entire workforce that give others a chance to experience their customs and traditions.
