2. The area under rice cultivation was increased from 2,74,000 hectares in 1873 to 1.1 million hectares in 1900, and 2.2 million in 1930. Vietnam exported 2/3 of its rice production and was the 3rd largest exporter of rice in the world in 1931.
3. Canals were built, mainly with forced labour, to drain the land in Mekong delta and to increase cultivation.
4. The trans- Indo-China rail network was constructed to link the northern and southern parts of Vietnam. It was linked with Yunan in China in 1910. The second link connected Vietnam to Siam.
