Avogadro's Law: an Italian chemist differentiated the ultimate particle of an element that takes part in the reactions and the ultimate particle that has independent existence. The smallest particle of an element that takes part in chemical reaction is called atom. It may or may not have independent existence. The smallest particle of a substance that has independent existence is called molecule.

Avogadro argued that since smallest particle of gases that has independent existence is a molecule and not an atom hence volume of gases should be related to number of molecules and not number of atoms. He put forward Avogadro's law which states that: Equal volume of all gases under similar conditions of temperature and pressure contain equal number of molecules.
