Open chain hydrocarbons are long straight chain of carbons with two terminals while closed chain hydrocarbons are in the form of closed rings .

For example..

propane is a open chain hydrocarbon while cyclopropane is a closed chain hydrocarbon.

Open chain hydrocarbons contain carbon-carbon straight chains. They are further classified into two types.
• Saturated hydrocarbons
• Unsaturated hydrocarbons.
