The reflection of light on any surface obeys certain laws, which are known to be Laws of Reflection. Basically, there are two laws of Reflection.

  • 1st - Angle of incidence = Angle of reflection

 \large{ \therefore{ \boxed{ \sf{  \angle \: i =  \angle \: r}}}}

  • 2nd - Incident ray, reflected ray and normal to the reflecting surface always lies on the same plane.

  • A ray of light striking the surface normally retraced its path.

✒ It means, when a light ray fall perpendicular on the surface of mirror, it reverse its path on reflection. That is, exactly retraces its path because angle of incidence is equal to angle of reflection.

Explanation:

When a ray of light strikes the surface normally, the angle of incidence is zero, with respect to normal. < i = 0°. According to the law of reflection, < r = < i, So, <r is also = 0° i.e. the reflected ray is also perpendicular to the surface. Thus, an incident that normal to the surface, retraced its path.

☄ The laws of reflection holds true for all kinds of mirror even, spherical or curved surface mirrors also.
