Answer:

  • Despite many short comings we can consider Indian democracy to be successful. When India became a free country in  1947 many western thinkers believed that it will not be able to survive for long but it has proved them wrong.
  • The power transition in India since its first elections 1951-1952 has been smooth.
  • The democracy has been functioning since 1947 while its neighboring countries have fallen to autocracy. The only blot on Indian democracy was the emergency period of 1975-1977.
  • It has also managed to safeguard the freedom of expression of its people and other fundamental rights are clearly mentioned in the constituion, Even a common man can criticize the Prime Minister.
  • It is a secular state.
  • Earlier it was dependent on other countries for food grains and technology, but it has progressed a lot. Now it is self sufficient in food gains and is a major software exporter.
  • Its current president  comes from a backward community which itself speaks of its success as a democracy. People from other minority community are also working on important posts.
