Electronic wastes mainly comprise of toxic components including Mercury, Lead, Cadmium, Polybrominated Flame Retardants, Barium, Lithium and plastic casings of Polyvinyl Chloride.

All these substances are known to have adverse effects on humans, animals, and the environment. A few effects are:

1. These toxins act adversely on human health and cause birth defects and damage to brain, heart, liver, kidney and skeletal system.

2. It also significantly affects the nervous and reproductive systems of the human body.

3. Bioaccumulative toxins (PBTs) that create environmental and health risks are produced when computers are incinerated and put in landfills or melted down.

4. When computer monitors and other electronics are burned, they create cancer-producing toxins and dioxins which get released into the air that we breathe.

5. If electronic wastes are thrown into landfills, the toxins released may leach into groundwater and affect local resources.
