The major causes of land degradation are as follows:

  • Deforestation
  • High use of fertilizer
  • Overgrazing
  • Excess Use of Fertilizers

Explanation:

Deforestation:

Forest binds the soil and prevent soil from getting eroded. Because of increasing deforestation which is cutting down of trees for own benefits can lead to soil erosion and land degradation

High use of fertilizer:

Fertiliser are chemical substances used for improving the crop yield, but the overuse of these fertilizers can lead to degradation of the soil and make it unfit for further cropping.

Overgrazing:

Due to the increase in livestock population, the need of grass also increases but it is limited in an area so, it leads to land degradation as it is continuously consumed by livestock.

Excess Use of Fertilizers:

Additional use of 'alkaline fertilizers' like sodium nitrate, basic slag, etc. may develop alkalinity in soils.
