Those materials which get weakly magnetised in the direction of applied magnetic field are called paramagnetic substance.

All atoms or molecules which have unpaired electrons generally show paramagnetism.

  1. These materials move from weaker magnetic field to a region of stronger magnetic field.
  2. They attract the magnetic field lines but only one part in 10⁵
  3. Individual dipole moments of Paramagnetic material has some value but net dipole moment of all domains is zero.
  4. The temperature below which material does not show Paramagnetic behaviour is called Curie temperature.
  5. Magnetisation of a paramagnetic material is inversely proportional to the absolute temperature T.

Hope these points and explanations help you.

  • There are atomic dipoles (net magnetic moment of each atom is not zero)
  • They are weakly attracted in external magnetic field.
  • X = +ve & small.
  • Ur= 1+ X Ur is slightly greater than I.
  • In non uniform external magnetic field they move from weak to strong field region.
  • Magnetic field lines becomes move dense inside paramagnetic substance.
  • Magnetization of Paramagnetic substances is inversely proportional to obsolute temperature.
