Answer:

(i) The disturbance is confined to a particular region and there is no onward motion.

(ii) There is no transference of energy in the medium.

(iii) The amplitude of vibration of the particles changes from zero (at nodes) to maximum (at antinodes).

(iv) The particles of the medium at nodes are permanently at rest.

Stationary waves are also known as 'Standing Waves. Stationary waves are a combination of two waves that have equal amplitude and frequency but appear moving in different directions.

Properties of Stationary Waves:

  1. These waves don't move in any direction.
  2. Since stationary waves don't move, they don't cause the transportation of energy through a medium.
  3. In such waves, particles between adjacent nodes cause vibration in the same phase, and particles in adjacent loops cause vibration in the opposite phase.
  4. A stationary wave appears as alternate intensity maximum and minimum.

Stationary waves oscillate in time but their peak amplitude does not move in space.
