solid = (i) particles are tightly packed within matter .

(ii) it has definite shape and definite volume .

(iii) solid cannot flow .

liquid = (i) particles are less tightly packed than in solids .

(ii) it has definitely volume but not definite shape .

(iii) liquid can flow .

gas = (i) particles are loosely packed and move about freely .

(ii) it has no definite shape and definite volume .

(iii) gases flow very easily .
