Bassanio is some sort of courtier or friend of the Marquis of Montferrat, which leads to his initially meeting Portia when a visit between the Marquis and Portia (Or Portia's Father) was taking place. Nerissa alsonotes Bassanio's style, and states that he is “worthy of a fair lady”.
